The Gyudmed Monastery was founded in 1433 by Jetsun Sherab Senge who was a direct disciple of Lama Tsongkhapa. since that time onwards to this day the lineage and the oral transmission of the great founders have continued without any let up. though china's forcible occupation and annexation of Tibet in 1959 was a great set back for Tibetan Buddhism when thousands of monks were killed, imprisoned and their monasteries indiscriminately destroyed by the Chinese's red communist. The old traditions have been preserved but owing to circumstances, some have not been practicable due to a variety of reasons and mostly because of the changed situation.

After becoming a Gyudmed monk he has to attend Prayer (puja) whole day for six years and has to sleep in the main Assembly hall throughout the six years . This is a form of penance and many monks are said to have attained high degree of realization. There were five hundred monks in Gyudmed Monastery before 1959, The reason for the limit was to represent the five hundred pundits of the Nalanda monastery in India . In Tibet prior to the Chinese occupation, new recruits came from the three province of Tibet, Mongolia, India, Nepal and Bhutan. After the National Upraising the Chinese in 1959 thousands of Tibetans fled their country and during this tragic event around 150 Gyudmed Monks where also able to escape in to India with H.H.The Dalai lama in April 1959.This nucleus overcame all the hardships of an exiled life and began recruiting new monks in 1970 who are already in exile and wants to become a monk in Gyudmed.. since 1981 until now many new comers escaping from Tibet to India and join in Gyudmed Monastery. Right now in Gyudmed Monastery has some around 640 monks altogether with only 28 of those left who fled from Tibet in the aftermath of red Chinese occupation and annexation of Tibet . There is two different classes in Gyudmed monks. one is called KYIRIMPA and one is called KARAMPA who are came from three biggest Sutra monastery of Tibet called Gaden,Drepung and Sera. The students who are Kyirimpa brought up in Gyudmed itself with the learning of the Buddhist dialectic in both Tantra and sutra, Tantric rituals.wood and Sand Mandala creation, butter sculptures chanting and some modern subjects. and Karampa they only study in Tantra.

About Monastic school for young Monks
Because of HHDalai lamas advised and big changing in this today's society. In 1984 Monastery opened one Monastic school for young monks called Gyudmed Tantric Monastic School . in this school they have all the subject in both Sutra and Tantra Plus English, Tibetan ,Mathematic and some another modern subjects etc. when it was initially started in 1984 there were only six teachers and around 45 students in all. also we dont have enough class rooms and qualified teachers for modern subjects on that time. in 1996 because of big support by Vietnamese friend Mr & Mrs Dang Tan hau we built new school building and invite qualified teachers.. However, over the years that number has greatly increasing and today, there are 17 teachers and around 380 students altogether. all the students studying both Sutra and Tantra enclosed modern subjects and every year they have annual Exam and after 15 years they have final Debate Exam and Monastery offer them Certificate of Geshe Ngarampa. which is same like Geshe Degree in Sutra's Monastery. There is no limit age to join in monastic school who wants to become a monk in this monastery all are O.K. also there is no different in person and Nationality who are from any country. presently we have monks from Tibet, Mongolia, Nepal, Bhutan, Russia, Vietnam and India.
About daily life of Monks.
Since 1433 when this monastery founded by Jetsun Sherab Singe until now we have two different season of Dharma activities called Summer Dharma activities (yar-choe) and Winter Dharma activities (Guen-choe) in lunar calendar. yar-choe is from February to July and Guen-choe is from mid July to January. since that time already confirmed daily time table for whole 365 days in year. such as doing prayer, meditation, debating etc .

Every Thursday is holiday, one week holiday in Tibetan New Year and one week summer holiday. individual monks have 45 days holiday per one year if you wants. if you stay more than 45 days a year than you will stay one more year in same class.
Above are daily time table for students of School and for the senior monks during only Assembly prayer time they have to come in temple and than do theirs own meditation, teachings and practice in theirs cell rooms.
